Before Your Visit
Q: How do I prepare for my first appointment at Tranquility Dentistry?
A: Bring your medical history, insurance details (if applicable), and any previous dental records. Arrive 10 minutes early to complete paperwork. For nervous patients, let us know—we offer sedation dentistry to keep you comfortable.
Q: What if I’m anxious about visiting the dentist?
A: Tell us! We offer sedation options, explain each step beforehand, and allow breaks. Slow, deep breathing or headphones with music can also ease anxiety. Options include:
- Oral sedatives (calming medication before your visit).
- TV/headphones to distract you during treatment.
- Gentle communication—we explain every step.

Q: How should I prepare for a dental filling/root canal/extraction?
A: Arrive well-rested, avoid caffeine if anxious, and eat a light meal (unless instructed otherwise). Bring a list of medications and any X-rays from previous dentists. For sedation appointments, arrange a ride home.
After Your Treatment
Q: How do I care for my teeth after a filling or crown?
A: Avoid chewing hard foods for 24 hours. Sensitivity to hot/cold is normal for a few days. Brush gently but thoroughly. For crowns, floss gently around the edges. Need advice? Call us if pain persists.
Q: What should I do after a tooth extraction?
A: Follow these steps:
- Bite on gauze for 30–60 minutes.
- Use an ice pack to reduce swelling.
- Eat soft foods (soup, yogurt) for 24 hours.
- Avoid smoking.
- Don’t use a straw for at least 72 hours.
Dental Emergencies
Q: What counts as a dental emergency?
A: We offer same-day emergency appointments in our Ipswich clinic.
Seek immediate care for:
- Severe toothache or swelling (possible infection).
- Knocked-out or cracked teeth.
- Broken teeth with sharp edges.
- Abscesses (swelling/pus).
- Uncontrolled bleeding.
Q: How can I relieve a toothache at home?
A: Rinse with warm saltwater, take over-the-counter pain relief (avoid aspirin on gums), and apply a cold compress. This is temporary—see us ASAP to address the cause.
Daily Oral Health
Q: Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
A: Bleeding gums often mean Gingivitis (early gum disease). Don’t stop brushing and use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Schedule a checkup to prevent progression.
Q: Why do my gums bleed when I floss?
A: Like Bleeding gums when brushing your teeth, bleeding gums when flossing often signal gingivitis (early gum disease). Don’t stop flossing! Gentle, consistent flossing and a dental checkup will help reverse it.
Q: Is an electric toothbrush really better?
A: Yes—studies show they remove more plaque. Look for one with a pressure sensor to protect gums. But technique matters more than the tool!
Q: Is mouthwash necessary?
A: Not always—brushing and flossing are most important. If you use mouthwash, choose alcohol-free (especially for dry mouth). Ask us for personalised recommendations during your hygiene appointment.
Procedures Explained
Q: Are dental implants painful?
A: Most patients report minimal discomfort—we use local anesthesia and sedation options. Recovery involves mild soreness (manageable with ibuprofen). Learn about our implant process.
Q: How long do dental implants last?
A: With proper care, implants can last 20+ years. They require regular brushing, flossing, and checkups—just like natural teeth.
Q: How long do dental veneers last?
A: With proper care, dental veneers typically last 10–15 years (sometimes longer!). Their lifespan depends on:
- Material: Porcelain veneers outlast composite resin (15+ years vs. 5–7 years).
- Oral Habits: Avoid chewing ice, hard foods, or using teeth as tools.
- Maintenance: Brush/floss daily, wear a nightguard if you grind teeth, and visit us regularly for checkups.
Pro Tip: Veneers may need replacement if they chip, loosen, or stain over time. We offer high quality veneers designed for durability and a natural look.
Q: How long do white fillings last?
A: 5–10 years, depending on care. Avoid chewing ice or hard candy to extend their life. We use tooth-coloured fillings for a natural look.
Q: Why do I need a deep cleaning?
A: This treats gum disease by removing plaque/tartar below the gumline. It prevents bone loss and tooth mobility. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable.

The Tranquility Dentistry Philosophy
At Tranquility Dentistry, we have a passion for improving your dental health in an affordable and comfortable way. We believe having a good relationship with your dental team, especially from a young age, is the best way to reduce fear and maintain your health so you have fewer issues in the future!
Our philosophy is to find the best solution for your dental health, taking into account all relevant factors, and do the best job we can with the least amount of discomfort possible. We will take the time to listen to your concerns, help you understand your diagnosis and explain different treatment options so you can make the best choice for yourself. To make your experience more comfortable we ensure we are as gentle as possible, and make sure you can communicate with us through your procedure, and we also provide options for anxiety and fear to help you.
We are conveniently located in Yamanto, just south of the Ipswich city centre (close to Raceview and Flinders View), servicing West (Willowbank, Amberley, Walloon), South (Deebing Heights, Ripley and Providence), East (Collingwood Park, Redbank and Springfield) and North (Brassal, Karalee) of Ipswich, but we welcome everyone!
As we believe your dental treatment doesn’t start and end with your teeth, we will be welcoming you to your visit with some questions which you may not usually expect at a checkup. Your work schedule, family commitments, and overall health will help us to determine how best to help you long term.
We work with people of all ages, but are particularly known for our nurturing and care of little ones. We take excellent care of your children and like to make going to the dentist something that they can enjoy and be relaxed about, not scared. We do not hesitate to help children to relax with our supportive team, toys and if needed we don’t hesitate to use a little nitrous oxide (happy gas) to ease the process in the dental chair. We have an awards program for our little ones to help them to feel, strong, brave and confident in coming to the dentist.
